How Newport County and Man United may match up

Two defenders are expected to return for Manchester United against Newport County on Sunday at Rodney Parade in the FA Cup fourth round, which might give head coach Erik ten Hag further optimism.

Prior to Sunday’s travel to Wales, Harry Maguire (groyne) and Luke Shaw (unspecified) participated in a loss to Burnley behind closed doors. Both players have returned to full-squad training this week.

Conversely, Mason Mount (calf), Tyrell Malacia (knee), Victor Lindelof (groyne), Anthony Martial (groyne), and Sofyan Amrabat—who competed in the Africa Cup of Nations—are not available.

Unless Ten Hag pulls a surprise by giving the gloves to Tom Heaton, Altay Bayindir should finally be christened in a Manchester United jersey for the fourth-round match. Onana is not available to protect the posts.

The Dutchman won’t take Newport lightly, but if Maguire is given more time to catch up, there should be room for Willy Kambwala to emerge in the middle of the backline, maybe next to the seasoned Jonny Evans.

Kobbie Mainoo’s starting position in midfield is certain, as is the starting lineup of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot. The issue is who will accompany the youthful sensation.

In the Red Devils’ most recent league game against Tottenham Hotspur, Christian Eriksen started while Casemiro was relegated to the bench. However, on Sunday, Scott McTominay was picked in the starting lineup against Wigan Athletic and may play again.

Antony should have plenty of chances to regain confidence on the trip to Newport. As Facundo Pellistri approaches a trade to Granada, the Brazilian is expected to line up in the final third with Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and Rasmus Hojlund.

Bayindir, Wan-Bissaka, Evans, Kambwala, Dalot, Mainoo, McTominay, Antony, Fernandes, Rashford, and Hojlund are probable starting lineup options for Manchester United.
