According to reports, Jose Mourinho wants to take over at Old Trafford for a second stint as manager because he feels that he has “unfinished business” at Manchester United.
After leaving Roma earlier this month, the 61-year-old is presently unemployed. Since then, he has been connected to the Barcelona position as Xavi’s impending exit became known.
Mourinho, however, is reportedly making it his goal’ to lead the 20-time English champions back to Manchester United, with the Daily Mail stating that this is his top priority.
According to the article, the seasoned manager believes that he would succeed at Old Trafford under the direction of new minority stakeholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
From May 2016 until December 2018, Mourinho was the manager of Manchester United, where he won the Europa League, the EFL Cup, and the Community Shield.
Following his departure from Old Trafford, Mourinho managed Roma, which he left on January 16, and Tottenham Hotspur, whom he managed from November 2019 until April 2021.
Mourinho has won several titles while managing Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid. In 2021–2022, he won the Europa Conference League with Roma.
With Manchester United having already suffered 14 losses in a dismal season, there are still doubts about Erik ten Hag’s ability to lead the squad.
The Red Devils are now ninth in the Premier League standings and were eliminated from Europe after finishing last in their Champions League group.
Manchester United is in a fierce race to make it into the Champions League for the next season. The squad is now eight points behind Tottenham Hotspur in fifth position and 11 points behind Aston Villa in fourth.
This season, the FA Cup presents the club with its only realistic opportunity to win a trophy; they are currently in the competition’s fifth round.
Ten Hag is not believed to be in immediate danger of losing his job because Ratcliffe and his INEOS team are willing to give him the chance to put together a strong run with a team that has benefited from the recovery of many players from injury.
The 53-year-old’s long-term future is far from certain, however, and if Manchester United choose to follow a different course this summer, he may end up leaving Old Trafford.
Graham Potter, a former Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion manager, is presently seen as the front-runner to succeed Ten Hag should a change arise.
