According to a source, Tottenham Hotspur does not presently have any intentions to turn Timo Werner’s loan into a permanent agreement this summer.
Tottenham decided to reinforce their offensive ranks this month since Ivan Perisic is leaving for Hajduk Split for the rest of the season and Son Heung-min is serving in the Asian Cup.
Alejo Veliz and Manor Solomon’s knee ailments have also limited Ange Postecoglou’s choices, but the Lilywhites moved swiftly to get former Chelsea player Werner back in the Premier League.
The 27-year-old has started every game for Postecoglou’s team since Tottenham repelled Manchester United’s apparent interest in signing him. On his debut, he assisted in a 2-2 Premier League tie with Manchester United.
Although Werner did not participate in Friday’s 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, he nevertheless made an impression with his lively performance, and Tottenham has the option to sign the German this summer for around £15 million.
But according to Football Insider, Werner will return to RB Leipzig as things stand, as the Lilywhites aren’t now willing to retain him on the books till the conclusion of the season.
The article suggests that Tottenham could reconsider if Werner becomes a global sensation in the coming months, but everyone agrees that when the season is finished, he will go back to Germany.
Werner’s deal with RB Leipzig is set to end in the summer of 2026, but he hasn’t been able to regain the form he had before joining Chelsea in the Premier League for £45.3 million in 2020.
Along with former Genoa defender Radu Dragusin, the 27-year-old is one of two new faces to join at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this month. However, the Spurs may make another move before Thursday’s deadline.
Postecoglou, who is missing Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma from the Africa Cup of Nations, is reportedly still looking for a new midfield player, while Lyon and Juventus are interested in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Conor Gallagher of Chelsea, whose contract expires in 2025, has long been linked to Spurs. However, the Blues reportedly want a whopping £80 million to contemplate a deal in the last days of the January transfer window.
Furthermore, it’s said that the Lilywhites have given up on signing Club Brugge winger Antonio Nusa, who has decided to join Brentford instead.
The 18-year-old is said to have been given promises that he would start regularly in the Premier League at the Gtech Community Stadium the following season, but Tottenham was unable to provide him with such assurances.
Wednesday night marks the Lilywhites’ return to Premier League action against the Bees. Postecoglou’s team comes into the midweek London derby sitting third in the standings, three points behind Manchester City, Arsenal, and Aston Villa.
