Chargers Justin Herbert agreed to five-year extension.

The night prior to the Chargers hit the training field in Costa Plateau, Calif., to start off training camp, the group has secured in its star quarterback Justin Herbert to a five-year, $262.5M contract expansion, making Herbert the most generously compensated quarterback in NFL history.

The arrangement keeps Herbert in L.A. through the 2029 season.

There were two years staying on Herbert’s rookie agreement, remembering a fifth-year choice for 2024 that would have accompanied a $29.5M cap hit. The expansion opens the entryway for Chargers senior supervisor Tom Telesco to lessen Herbert’s cap hit for 2024, a need with L.A. projected to be $60.577M over the cap for that season.

Herbert’s arrangement comes in at half a million dollars more on normal each year than that of Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, who marked his expansion back in May.

Herbert is the second quarterback from the 2020 draft class to procure a subsequent agreement, the first being Falcons quarterback Jalen Damages, who marked a five-year, $255M expansion back in April.

Next up is Bengals quarterback Joe Tunnel, who is remembered to have been trusting that Herbert will sign his expansion prior to inking his very own arrangement. Tunnel’s next arrangement will come in over the benchmark set by Herbert.

Drafted by the Chargers with the 6th generally pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Herbert set the freshman standard for passing scores with 31, tossed the fourth-most passing yards ever by a youngster quarterback with 4,336, and won the AP Hostile Thenew hotness grant.

Herbert is 25-24 as a beginning quarterback. He made his season finisher debut this previous season in L.A’s. trump card misfortune to the Panthers, a game they at one point drove 27-0.
