After defeating Brentford 3-2 in North London, Tottenham Hotspur has risen to fourth place in the Premier League standings.
Brentford took the lead in the fifteenth minute thanks to a goal from Neal Maupay, but Spurs responded with three goals in the first half of the second half from Richarlison, Brennan Johnson, and Destiny Udogie.
In the 67th minute, Ivan Toney gave Thomas Frank’s team a second goal, but the visitors were unable to score another as Tottenham prevailed in a thrilling match in the capital.
Due to goal differential, Ange Postecoglou’s team is above Aston Villa and is now in fourth place; Brentford, on the other hand, is still in 15th place and is just four points above the relegation zone.
Oliver Skipp had the first half-chance of the game in the fourth minute after deft work from Dejan Kulusevski, but Brentford defender Ethan Pinnock blocked his attempt.
In the thirteenth minute, Mads Roerslev seemed to have given the Bees the lead, but his attempt was ruled out for an offside on Mathias Jensen.
However, the visitors did manage to take the lead in the fifteenth minute when Maupay finished from close range after Guglielmo Vicario, the Tottenham custodian, had stopped Toney’s strong shot.
In the twenty-first minute, Timo Werner attempted a long-range shot from the outside of the box to find the bottom corner for Spurs. However, Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken made a great save, and the striker from RB Leipzig, who was on loan, headed the ensuing corner wide at the far post.
In the twenty-fiveth minute, Richarlison’s long-range attempt from Tottenham almost found the back of the net, but the pressure on the Brentford goal was mounting.
In the 36th minute, a deflected pass towards Nathan Collins at the far post gave the visitors an opportunity to double their lead. However, the defender barely missed the mark, and Pinnock’s fantastic flick from the ensuing corner went just wide of Vicario’s goal.
In the 38th minute, Richarlison had the ball in the goal for Brentford, but his attempt was disregarded due to Collins’ obvious foul, ending the North London team’s agonising first frame.
In the last minute of the first half, Toney gave Brentford another opportunity, but Vicario stopped his header from a risky Jensen pass, giving the Bees a one-goal lead at the break.
However, Spurs were able to tie the game early in the second half when Udogie broke into the Brentford area and scored from close range in the 48th minute.
Less than a minute later, Johnson, a replacement, scored Tottenham’s winning goal at the far post after a low Werner cross had set up joyful celebrations inside the stadium.
In the 54th minute, Richarlison again went close to the post with a shot, but the Brazilian was finally able to get on the scoreboard in the 56th minute after a deflected cross from James Maddison found its way into his path.
Just beyond the hour, Toney almost made it 3-2 when he hammered one into the far corner, but his attempt whistled wide of the goal. Two minutes later, after first sneaking inside the box, the striker shot another one wide of the target.
However, Toney was not going to back down, and in the 67th minute, he scored after Udogie made a terrible error by failing to find his custodian and giving the ball directly to the Englishman.
In stoppage time, Shandon Baptiste gave Brentford a near look at goal number three, but Vicario blocked his shot and Christian Norgaard mishandled the ensuing corner kick. Spurs held on to win the game and earn a crucial three points.
Then, on Saturday afternoon, Tottenham will go on the road to play Everton, and on Monday night, Brentford will return to action at home against the reigning champions, Manchester City.
